There’s something about a city hall wedding that I just can’t get enough of. Maybe it’s the effortless elegance, maybe it’s the intimacy, maybe it’s that you’re craving intention over tradition, or maybe it’s the quiet confidence of deciding that your love is so deep and strong, you don’t need a huge wedding to show it. Whatever it is, I know that as a California wedding photographer, a San Francisco City Hall wedding is everything, and I’m teaching you everything you need to know to plan yours in a way that feels elevated, but not overdone, and most importantly, truly feels like you.

No matter which wedding package calls your name, your very first steps will be planning your wedding date, scheduling your San Francisco City Hall wedding, and then getting your marriage license. The process is simple and stress-free for you; just click here and follow the steps.

If you want a wedding day without production, pressure, or performance, the elopement package is perfect for you. It’s a civil ceremony, a few photos, and then you can go out and celebrate however you see fit. This option is perfect for couples who want an intimate ceremony that feels meaningful and uncomplicated, with the sole focus on starting forever together. This is the easiest option, planning-wise. A few minutes, and then you’re married!
At a glance:
Maximum Number of Guests: 6 (including your vendors)
Available Times: Every half-hour between 9:00 am and 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday
Cost: $90, paid at time of scheduling
Ceremony Locations: Either the Rotunda, a private room, or the Fourth Floor Gallery, randomly chosen by what’s available
Private Event?: No, it’s not closed off to the public
My best tips for an elopement at San Francisco City Hall are to schedule a day between Monday and Wednesday, and earlier in the day to try to beat the crowds. Since it’s not fully private, planning for a quieter time of day gives you that more intimate feel that you’re probably craving if you’re planning a courthouse wedding.
Also, you should try to reserve your spot as soon as you know what you want your wedding date to be. Times fill up fast here, so make sure to book your ideal date as soon as possible!
9:00 am: Check in + ceremony paperwork
9:30 am: Civil ceremony
9:40 am: Family photos on the Fourth Floor
10:00 am: Newlywed portraits at my favorite spots (mentioned below!)
10:45 am: Head outside for your champagne celebration
11:00 am: Head to your next celebration!

The next step up from the civil ceremony package is the one-hour ceremony. It’s perfect for the couple who wants something a little bigger than an elopement, but not quite a full-blown wedding. This is that perfect in-between spot where you can have all of your favorite people there to see you say “I do,” but still kick back and relax with a glass of wine instead of going crazy over wedding planning.
At a glance:
Maximum Number of Guests: 100 (including your vendors)
Available Times: Every hour between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday
Cost: $1,200. Note: Chair rentals are an additional fee!
Ceremony Locations: Either the Mayor’s Balcony or the Fourth Floor Gallery. You can request your favorite, but note that they’re first-come, first-served.
Private Event?: You get exclusive use of your ceremony site, but you may still see some people in other locations from where you are
The same goes here, I’d suggest booking between Monday and Wednesday, earlier in the day. This isn’t as crucial here since you get exclusive use of your ceremony site, but it can still be nice to beat the crowds.
For this package, you’ll want to schedule at least four weeks in advance to reserve your date.
9:00 am: Check in + ceremony paperwork
9:30 am: Civil ceremony on the Mayor’s Balcony
9:45 am: Family photos on the Mayor’s Balcony
10:15 am: Newlywed portraits at my favorite spots
11:00 am: Head outside for your champagne celebration
11:15 am: Head to your next celebration!

If this all sounds nice, but you still want all your favorite people there and you’d prefer a weekend date, you might opt for the two-hour wedding package. That gives you time to get married, visit with your friends and family, and then go to wherever you want to go next, whether it’s a dinner party or cozying up on the couch with your new spouse, whatever feels most like you.
At a glance:
Maximum Number of Guests: 200 (including your vendors)
Available Times: Saturdays only, between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm
Cost: $6,000
Ceremony Locations: Wherever your heart desires!
Private Event?: Yes!
Note that for a two-hour wedding, you’ll need to schedule at least three months in advance, but preferably sooner to save your spot!
9:00 am: Meet outside for portraits
9:30 am: Check in + ceremony paperwork
10:00 am: Civil ceremony at the Rotunda
10:30 am: Family photos on the staircase
11:00 am: Newlywed portraits on 4th floor
11:45 am: Champagne celebration outside
12:00 pm: Head to celebrate!

And finally, if you want a full-blown wedding that’s a ceremony surrounded by everyone you love, plus a dance floor that lasts all night, City Hall delivers that beautifully, too! It’s so romantic, it’s a more by-the-book wedding, and it’s in such a unique location that no one will forget.
At a glance:
Maximum Number of Guests: 2,000
Available Times: Any evening except for Tuesdays, with set up beginning at 4:00 pm and the event concluding by 12:00 am.
Cost: Starting at $10,000
Ceremony Locations: Your choice of the Rotunda, the Grand Staircase, and the Light Courts
Private Event?: Yes, but note that San Francisco City Hall stays open to the public until 8:00 pm Monday through Friday, so we may have to navigate around crowds in some photo spots

If you’re dreaming of wedding photos that feel like art, taken in a space that feels romantic and cinematic, San Francisco City Hall has you covered. The understated elegance is in every corner, the architecture is absolutely stunning, and the light hits the white marble in a way that feels like it was meant for just you.
Here’s my list of photo spots that are a must, so you know where we’re going in advance:
One of my most helpful tips for planning your San Francisco City Hall wedding is to book a photographer who knows how to work around the crowds (hi!), because it truly makes a difference in both your experience and in your gallery.
To beat the crowds and get the softest light that makes your wedding photos feel like a dream, I recommend earlier in the day. It’s easier to navigate around the crowds, plus the way the light hits through the windows? Unmatched.

Yes! All love is welcome and celebrated at San Francisco City Hall.
A courthouse wedding gives you the unique opportunity to dress as formal or as casual as you’d like. A personal favorite is always a simple, elegant, satin wedding dress. Here are a few I love:
For one of the three smaller packages, champagne is not permitted inside of San Francisco City Hall. But don’t worry, you can celebrate until your heart’s content afterwards!
Yes! If you’d like to bring your pup, dogs are allowed at your San Francisco City Hall wedding.
Your ceremony will last about 5-10 minutes for an elopement package, but for a one or two-hour package, you’ll need to bring your own officiant, so it can be as long or as short as you’d like!

A San Francisco City Hall wedding is right for so many people. Couples who want a large, luxury, indoor wedding, couples who want just a civil ceremony, and couples who want something right in the middle, all in a space that’s polished and refined. It has intimacy, beauty, and versatility, all wrapped up in one place that feels timeless and full of heart.
If you’re opting for one of the smaller packages and wondering what’s nearby to extend your celebration, I’ve got you covered! Here are my favorite spots that are easy to get to, and match the vibe your city hall wedding is bringing:
Pro tip: Hire me for extra coverage here, because the moody feel of these bars is something you will want in your gallery.

A Two-hour wedding at San Francisco City Hall sounded like a dream to Lauren and Matt, and they said “I do” surrounded by just a handful of their favorite people, all wearing bright, bold colors. Every detail of their day was stunning, from Lauren’s gorgeous satin elopement dress to her simple bouquet to the love that filled every corner of the courthouse.

I’m a huge light and shadow person, so as a San Francisco wedding photographer, the light hitting through the windows was amazing to play with, and it couldn’t have framed Lauren and Matt any more perfectly.
Their day was so simple, yet one that will be unforgettable to everyone in attendance. It all fell together like art. Everything was soft, sweet, and filled with romance.

If you’re dreaming of a high-end, intimate wedding that has you written all over it, San Francisco City Hall might just be your place. As a San Francisco wedding photographer, I believe that your photos should tell your story, so whether it’s the courthouse or another breathtaking location, I’ll follow you there and be ready to capture your authentic moments artfully in a way that makes every image full of meaning.
