Tradition, elegance, and intentionality immediately come to mind when I think of Catholic weddings. I picture moments filled with meaning, all in a setting that lets your story breathe. A day that’s refined, effortlessly beautiful, and never overdone. The weight of a moment that generations have shared. The way stained glass light hits a veil. The way tradition turns into memory the second you say “I do.”
Even if you’re a non-traditional or modern couple, there’s something undeniably powerful about the emotional weight of a Catholic ceremony. The architecture, the lighting, the stillness, the symbolism… it all creates a feeling you can’t fully explain. It’s less about following every tradition and more about grounding your day in something meaningful.
If you’re looking for wedding planning tips that will make your wedding feel just like that, you won’t want to miss this guide. As a luxury California wedding photographer, I’ve gained knowledge from helping plan a lot of weddings, which I’m now here to share with you to make your Catholic wedding day full of beauty and intentionality.

Catholic weddings keep religion at the center of the day, and let everything bloom naturally around it. They almost always include prayers, readings, and a unity candle ceremony. Every aspect is rooted in meaning and tradition, which is such a beautiful way to start a marriage.
Catholic ceremonies move at a slower, more intentional pace, which I love because it gives me time to anticipate emotional moments naturally.

For couples who love heirloom details, Catholic weddings are a dream. Rosaries, lace veils, embroidered handkerchiefs, family Bibles… everything tells part of your story.
Choosing a setting that complements both the heritage of the religion and a modern design is key, which is usually anywhere with charming architecture and an effortless atmosphere. And from a lighting perspective, morning ceremonies in old churches create the most ethereal glow.

Dayanna and Fernando said “I do” at Most Holy Rosary Chapel at Saint Vincent’s School for Boys, and it was absolutely breathtaking. It had a simple, understated luxury, with stained glass windows, intricate architecture, and a stunning European feel.
A few other Catholic churches in Northern California that I love for Catholic weddings are Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph and Cathedral of the Annunciation.

Dayanna and Fernando kept the tradition and heritage flowing throughout their day, incorporating a mariachi band as a part of their celebration, and I’m obsessed. That’s something I’d love to see at every Catholic wedding from here on out!

Band or no band, celebrating your marriage with your people is such a special time, whether that’s your 20 favorite people or your 300 favorite people. As long as your celebration feels like you, you can’t go wrong.
For Catholic weddings, I typically see an intimate dinner to celebrate, followed by a party on the dance floor surrounded by fun, good music, and good food. That’s a recipe that you can never go wrong with.

You don’t have to be traditional to love the emotion and artistry of a Catholic ceremony. Many of my couples are wildly modern… They’re the kind who elope on cliffs or dance barefoot, but still choose a Catholic church because of family heritage, cultural meaning, or simply the architecture and atmosphere. If you’re a non-traditional couple who still wants a ceremony that feels grounded and heartfelt, a Catholic wedding can be surprisingly aligned with your values.
You can keep a wedding full of tradition and spirituality while still making it modern. It’s all about using elements that bridge that gap. Think non-traditional color palettes, modern fashion, personal vows before or after the ceremony, and unique reception locations.
Some of my most modern, non-traditional couples choose a Catholic ceremony for its depth, then pair it with a chic rooftop dinner, a modern art gallery reception, or a small intimate gathering afterward. It’s the perfect blend of honoring your roots while still doing things your way.

Luxury wedding photography and Catholic weddings go hand-in-hand, since there’s such a natural elegance to Catholic weddings. You are art, the churches are art, and your photos should be art, too.
Capturing your day through elevated, fine-art photography is something I love doing, and the style complements Catholic weddings so well. Every beautiful detail deserves its own spotlight. Your moments deserve to be frozen in time in a way that feels natural and authentic.

Dayanna and Fernando had a day deeply rooted in intentionality and love. A meaningful church ceremony full of sweet, romantic moments then turned into a party that was genuinely so much fun later on in the night, and I couldn’t have imagined a more perfect balance for the two of them.

And don’t even get me started on the design. Dayanna was a bride with a vision, and her aesthetic blended modernity and tradition so beautifully. The black and white color palette was so elegant, in a way that wasn’t trying too hard. And that’s the best kind of wedding design.

At the reception, they had two different bands, and that made the party so vibrant. The atmosphere was amazing, with drinks flowing, energy flowing, and love flowing, it’s safe to say that the couple was properly celebrated!

Whether you’re planning a traditional Catholic wedding or a celebration that blends spirituality with your own non-traditional twist, I’d love to document it in a way that feels honest, emotional, and true to who you are.
